Top 10 Reasons Why You Need a Personal Brand
You typically hear about branding as it relates to a company. It’s part of a business marketing strategy that allows its target audience to identify, relate to and experience that company, it’s product and services. So, what do we mean when we talk about a Personal Brand?
WHAT IS PERSONAL BRANDING
Personal Branding is how you present yourself and show up in the world. It’s how others perceive you and it includes every experience people have when they interact with you. Having a successful personal brand means you understand who you are, your strengths and unique value and present yourself that way consistently. It means you’ve found your voice and can offer up something no one else can - you and your perspective.
Personal branding isn’t a new concept. However, most people talking about personal branding today are discussing how you use your personal brand to get hired, get promoted, or simply raise your profile at work. Those are great reasons to develop your personal brand, and they’re all true. In addition to that, I believe that you are more than just your work. If we’re talking about a brand, we need to look at every aspect of that brand - a 360 degree view, so to speak. As a person, you have interests and goals for your career, but you also have life goals. Goals for your relationships, your family, your finances, your home, your spirituality, your travel and hobbies.
Everyone has a personal brand, whether they’re aware of it or not. It’s those people who are intentional in developing and implementing their personal brand who can really take control of their life and arrive at their intended destination faster than others. Do you want to live your life riding in the passenger seat of a car taking in the scenery and not knowing if you'll like where you end up? Or, do you want to be the driver, where you plan your trip, map out where you’re going and how you intend to get there?
The benefits of being the driver of your personal brand are numerous, and here are ten reasons why you should consider developing your personal brand.
THE BENEFITS OF DEVELOPING & IMPLEMENTING YOUR PERSONAL BRAND
When you are able to show up as the best version of yourself, everyone in your life will respond positively to you which will strengthen and deepen your relationships.
2) INCREASED PRODUCTIVITY TOWARDS YOUR GOALS
Part of personal branding is developing your mission and vision for your life. You could call it your purpose. When you know your goals, it’s much easier to be productive towards reaching them.
3) A MORE MINDFUL & FULFILLED LIFE
The goal of personal branding is to stay present and mindful with who you are, what you do and how you want to show up in the world. Anytime you are being mindful of your mission and goals, you are going to feel more fulfilled because you are fully engaged in each moment.
4) REDUCED STRESS
Imagine being able to worry less about those things that no longer fit into the definition of your personal brand. It helps you create boundaries and choose the activities and tasks that are part of your core values. If you need to do a task you would normally find annoying or overwhelming, you may still need to do that, but you can choose to have a different perspective about it. It could be something at work where it’s a mundane task you don’t like doing, but with your personal brand firmly in place you can simply be mindful that it’s something that has to get done and the sooner you do it the sooner you can move onto doing the things that do fulfill your personal mission. You can choose to see it as a means to an end or simply as something that’s not worth your energy to worry about because in the long run that specific task doesn’t matter much to you.
5) PRIORITIZING YOURSELF
This is a big one that makes such a huge difference in peoples’ lives. To effectively implement your personal brand, you need to prioritize yourself. Taking care of yourself is paramount to being able to show up as your best self. So, good news, you are now #1 on your list! You need to be in order to have the energy to pursue all those big dreams you have in every area of your life.
6) GREATER INFLUENCE
People will be drawn to you as your best self. They’ll want to know your secret and you’ll have greater influence over a lot of your relationships, both at work and outside of work, simply because more people like being around you. People trust someone who has the confidence to be themselves.
7) A MORE INTENTIONAL APPROACH TO PEOPLE & SITUATIONS
When you have defined your personal brand, you can take a look at the meetings or family functions or activities on your calendar and decide beforehand how you want those interactions to go. For example, if one of your key brand words is INSPIRING, before each specific interaction you have, think about how you can leave the other person / people inspired. It's a win-win for everyone!
8) A GUIDE POST FOR DECISION-MAKING
Your personal brand is a definition of who you are, what you want to do in your life and your overall life mission. Knowing this makes it very easy to determine whether an opportunity fits within your personal brand or doesn’t. Compare opportunities with your core values - do they match? Then, that decision is most likely a yes. If an opportunity skews widely away from your overall values or mission, then you can choose to let that one go.
9) BEING PROACTIVE INSTEAD OF REACTIVE
Have you ever felt like you spend every day reacting to everything and everyone that comes up and you can’t get ahead of anything in order to be proactive in your planning or decision-making? We’ve all been there. Personal branding isn’t a magic wand. You must stay mindful and intentional with your personal brand in order for it to work. When you are implementing your personal brand successfully, you will find that because you’re being present to your authentic self, you're automatically being more proactive and you have the capacity to choose your reactions well.
10) THE CONFIDENCE TO BE YOU
One of the most important benefits to developing and implementing your personal brand is that it allows you to feel more confident about who you are and the awesome value you’re contributing to the world. Who doesn’t want to feel more confident about themselves at work? In relationships? With their family? The confidence to BE YOU is one of the best reasons to develop your personal brand.
